Supporting Yanomami communities to preserve tropical forests

Cartier for Nature is supporting Hutukara Associação Yanomami in Brazil to advance protection and reforestation initiatives on Yanomami land in the Amazon rainforest. While the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain has been raising awareness about Yanomami culture, this two-pronged effort is necessary amid increasing pressures and threats, and more broadly to contribute to the fight against deforestation and climate change.

Protecting wildlife and improving livelihoods

Cartier for Nature has teamed up with COMACO in eastern Zambia to protect wildlife and the environment. This organisation has managed to convince poachers to convert to sustainable farming in order to improve their livelihoods. They no longer need to hunt game to sell pelts, ivory or meat, or to destroy the forest to sell timber.

Boosting indigenous low-carbon economies to support nature conservation

In 2019, Cartier supported local organisations to fight the devastating bush fires in Australia. Cartier for Nature is now supporting The Nature Conservancy in northern Australia to develop a carbon offset marketplace with indigenous communities. Using traditional methods to prevent major fires and effectively manage their own land, these communities greatly reduce the greenhouse gases produced by wildfires in the hot season.

SECTION 3: Cartier and The Lion’s Share Fund

In October 2020, Cartier joined The Lion’s Share Fund, an initiative that is rallying businesses, environmental conservationists and consumers to tackle the global crisis facing nature, biodiversity and the climate.

This innovative fund, led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and a coalition of businesses and UN partners, aims to raise over $100 million over the next five years to fund efforts to halt biodiversity loss and protect habitats and species.
